The Ministry is responsible for the Land and Maritime Transport industry through its capacity to strengthen coordination, planning, policies and monitoring of the transport sector in Fiji.
The Ministry is also responsible for sound advice on strategic planning guidance and fostering collaboration between transportation authorities, service providers, and operators, as well as an external reference group made up of major transportation industry members.

The Ministry provides policy direction and guidance to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) as well as monitor their performance through that business strategic and operational plans. Additionally, the Ministry is responsible for the release of annual quarterly grants (Opex and Capex).
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) operates under the Land Transport Act 1998 with the prime purpose of administering driver, vehicle and operator licensing, vehicle roadworthiness certification including vehicle testing and road compliance enforcement, motor vehicle dealerships and driving schools. The primary focus of its functions and operations is to ensure Road Safety.

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) operates under the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji Act 2009 and Maritime Transport Act 2013 with the responsibility for policy and regulatory functions related with the maritime sector and covers vessel safety and security, maritime safety services, marine navigation services, port control, pilot age, pollution prevention and response, maritime search & secure, hydrographic services, promoting Fiji maritime interest and meeting society’s needs.
MSAF is also responsible for meeting Fiji’s commitment to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other international and regional organizations.
