Government Shipping Services
The Government Shipping Services functions as a department to serve Government’s Shipping Service needs by providing shipping and related services, development of shipping strategies and related infrastructure.The objective is to operate and maintain mandatory Marine Navigational Aids by facilitating sea transportation thus provide travel, tourism, agriculture, fisheries and commercial activity as well as facilitates sea safety and fulfill national obligations.
Also facilitates professional and mandatory maritime training to provide vessels for enhanced maritime training thereby improving employment opportunities, promoting social and economic growth. Facilitates training for Fiji Maritime officers and administrators.
Roles of Department
The Department of Government Shipping Services promotes and facilitates, in accordance with Government policies and priorities, the national need for sea transportation. This is through the provision of shipping and maritime aids to navigational services.
The main functions of the Department are:
- To provide shipping services to Government and facilitate the development of other maritime infrastructure;
- To manage Maritime Navigational Aids to fulfill Government’s International Obligation to the maritime community.
- To facilitate training for Fiji Maritime officers as required by the STCW 1995 Convention and administrators. Also facilitates professional and mandatory maritime training to provide vessels for enhanced maritime training thereby improving employment opportunities, promoting social and economic growth.
