Standards FAQ
1. What is a Standard?
Standards are published documents setting out specifications and procedures. They are designed to ensure products, services and systems are safe, reliable and consistent. They are based on sound industrial, scientific and consumer experience and are regularly reviewed to ensure they keep pace with new technologies. They cover everything from consumer products and services, construction, engineering, business, information technology, human services to energy and water utilities, the environment and much more.
2. What is the purpose of Standards?
Standards specify requirements to achieve minimum objectives of safety, quality or performance of a product or service. Standards are voluntary documents unless referenced by government in legislation. Standards can also serve as purchasing specifications or technical conditions of contract between two parties. Standards may be used for educational purposes including recommendations, or administrative or project management procedures.
3. Are standards mandatory?
DNTMS publish voluntary standards. However, when standards are referenced under Fijian law or legislation then these standards can become mandatory.
4. What does Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards (DNTMS) do?
Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards is the National Standards Body in Fiji. We develop standards, technical specifications, handbooks and other publications and participate in international standards development as a member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). We enforce or regulate small number of standards such as bottled water, fuel, battery, fireworks and hot water bottles.
DNTMS form technical committees made up of stakeholders from government, business, industry, community, academia and consumers. Through a process of consensus, these committees develop standards for Fiji’s net benefit. We facilitate that process.
