FIJI AND INDONESIA STRENGTHEN TIES IN TOURISM

Sep 23, 2022 | News

Along the margins of the G20 Trade, Investment and Industry and Tourism Ministerial Meetings in Bali, Indonesia — and ahead of World Tourism Day, Fiji and Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance cooperation in tourism.

The MOU was jointly signed by the Indonesian Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy, Hon. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno and the Fijian Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport, Hon. Faiyaz Koya.

As economies with significant contribution by the tourism sector, the Ministers provided their support in enhancing cooperation on tourism best practices that promote more responsible tourism.

The MOU further seeks stronger partnership in accelerating tourism recovery, strengthening private sector collaboration and capacity building. In highlighting bilateral partnerships, Fiji shared the significance of our diplomatic relations with Indonesia, who currently preside over G20 (Group of 20)[1].

“Our bilateral relations span over three decades – and remain strong. Just two months ago, the Fijian Prime Minister reaffirmed Fiji’s support to strengthen bilateral and economic ties with H.E. Retno Marsudi, at the 17th Session of the G20 Summit. And today, we want to pursue this further,” said Hon. Koya.

“Through this MOU, we intend to build synergy in areas of shared significance such as rural tourism. This will be more than bilateral relations, there will be greater private sector and people-to-people ties,” added Minister Koya.

Greater scope of areas will be identified into supporting areas such as infrastructure, technology, trade and investment.

Built on common aspirations, Hon. Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno shared that Indonesia wishes to further relations with Fiji on Tourism.

“This is a milestone achievement for the two economies who share similar opportunities and challenges such as climate change and human capital. The implementation of this MOU will increase collaboration in areas of product and human resource development, Tourism promotion and knowledge exchange,” said Hon. Uno

Following the signing of the MOU, the Fijian delegation will represent Fiji at the G20       Tourism Ministerial Meeting on 26 September and the World Tourism Day with the theme ‘Rethinking Tourism’ on 27 September 2022.
