Bula vinaka and a warm welcome to everyone here today in Tau Village
I am truly delighted to celebrate this momentous occasion – the graduation of 80 inspiring
individuals from the “Start and Improve Your Business” training program. This program,
is a testament to the Fiji Government’s commitment to empowering our rural communities,
specifically here in Tau Village, Nadroga District.
A huge round of applause goes to our 80 graduates, 33 men and 47 women, who
dedicated themselves to this three-day program.
MSMEs in Fiji plays a critical role in the economic landscape – contributing towards
growth and job opportunities. MSMEs in Fiji are a catalyst for job creation, income
generation, economic diversification and rural community development.
That is why it is crucial to offer such tailor made business trainings to equip our businesses
with the right skill set to run a business.
As Minister responsible for MSMEs, we are working on creating a seamless MSME
ecosystem in Fiji. The Ministry is working on developing a MSME strategic plan, improving
access to finance by introducing alternative form of raising finance and working on a
MSME Bill.
Ladies and Gentleman,
I wish to highlight a few things:
1. Financial Literacy: The Cornerstone of Success
I particularly commend the focus on financial literacy within the training. Understanding
finances is the cornerstone of any successful business, regardless of size or location.
The knowledge you’ve gained will empower you to make informed decisions, manage
your resources effectively, and ultimately, unlock your full entrepreneurial potential.
2. Entrepreneurial Spirit of Tau Village
Looking around in this room, I see a vibrant tapestry of entrepreneurs. We have
farmers, retailers, talented handicraft creators, and even community members who
bring Fiji’s rich culture to life through traditional performances. This diversity
showcases the incredible entrepreneurial spirit that thrives in Tau Village.
3. Capitalising on Local Opportunities
The proximity of resorts such as the Marriott Resorts in Momi Bay, and the
Intercontinental Hotel present fantastic opportunities for your businesses to flourish.
Do not hesitate to leverage these connections and cater to the needs of tourists and
the local community.
The knowledge gained from this training, coupled with your existing skills and local
market understanding, creates a winning formula for success.
4. Investing in Your Future
The Fijian Government remains unwavering in its support for entrepreneurship,
particularly in rural areas. We believe that by equipping individuals with the right tools
and knowledge, we can unlock a wave of economic empowerment across the nation.
Please continue to pursue your respective business ventures. I strongly encourage you
continue to reach out to the Ministry and work with business partners.
Vinaka vakalevu (Thank you very much) to all the participants and everyone who made
this program a success. May your businesses thrive and bring prosperity to Tau Village
and beyond!
Vinaka!
